SHENDI, SUDAN
1. (SWN) SIGNIFICANCE: A PROBABLE PALESTINE LIBERATION
ORGANIZATION 0 CAMP HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED IN CENTRAL
SUDAN.
2. (SWN) REMARKS: SHENDI PROBABLE PLO REFUGEE CAMP HAS BEEN
NEWLY IDENTIFIED 7 NM SOUTH OF THE TOWN OF SHENDI AND 85
NM NORTHWEST OF KHARTOUM. THE CAMP CONSISTS OF ONE LARGE
BUILDING, ONE SMALL BUILDING, FOUR SHEDS, 23 LARGE TENTS,
THREE SMALL TENTS, AND ONE POSSIBLE ATHLETIC FIELD. IT IS
PARTIALLY FENCE SECURED. THE CAMP DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE
ACTIVE; NO PERSONNEL OR VEHICLES WERE OBSERVED.
(C) THIS CAMP IS PROBABLY THE SUDANESE ARMY TRAINING CAMP
AT MAAGHEEL (16-35-OON 033-27-OOE) WHICH REPORTEDLY WAS TO
BE USED TO HOUSE APPROXIMATELY 500 PLO MEMBERS.
(SW REPORTEDLY, THE PLO CONTINGENT RELOCATED TO
SUDAN COMPLAINED ABOUT THE CAMP INTENDED FOR THEIR USE AND
WERE MOVED TO AN AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH FACILITY CLOSER TO
SHENDI. THIS MAY ACCOUNT FOR THE LACK OF ACTIVITY SEEN AT
THIS FACILITY.

A PLO CONTINGENT FROM BEIRUT, LEBANON, WAS SEEN IN PORT
SUDAN
