SUBJECT Weekly Report for 12-16 April 1982
I. DCI/DDCI-Assigned Tasks
-- C/NIC attended a Interagency Review Group meeting on NSSD 1-82
(US National Security Strategy) on 12 April.
-- C/NIC attended a SIG meeting on START on 14 April.
II. Other Activities
NIO/Strategic Programs hosted an interagency post-mortem
meeting on NIE 11-3/8-81 on 15 April. The attendees went over
some deficiencies in the current estimate and discussed the
possibility of making some relatively minor modifications in
the 1982 version.
C/NIC, the Acting NIO/USSR, and NIO/Economics participated in
an intelligence briefing provided to members of the Buckley
mission on probable Soviet credit requirements for the 1980s
and the effects of possible Western credit restrictions.
Both Assistant NIOs/Near East-South Asia arranged and
oarticioated in briefings of
(who will travel to Iraq, Jordan, and tgypt) ana~ i
(who expects to see Yasir Arafat ~n Beirut
to visit Israel and the West Bank).
The Assistant NIO/Latin America chaired an interagency .meeting
to review data on post-election guerrilla strength and strategy
in E1 Salvador. The participants concluded that there are now
4 to 5,000 guerrillas in-country.

-- NIO/Economics wrote a NIC Memorandum on the "Soviet Bloc
Financial Problem as a Source of Western Influence" which was
distributed on 12 April.
-- The Assistant NIO/East Asia attended a Council on Foreign
Relations seminar in New York on 12 April on the Philippines
and will attend a second meeting there on 19 April, also on the
Philippines.
III. Future Activities
-- NIO/Africa is preparing a memorandum to be given to the DCI on
20 April concerning Libyan activities in western Africa.
-- NFIB agency representatives have completed coordinating the
draft of NIE 30-82 (Key Military Issues in the Middle East).
Pending the DCI's approval, this estimate and the updated NIC
estimates production plan are tentatively slated for discussion
at NFIB on 27 April.
