DCI/DDCI-Assigned Tasks NIO/General Purpose Forces met with Generals Faurer, D/NSA; Marks, ACSI/AF; and Odom, ACSI/USA to discuss issues derived from the DCI's trip to Europe. Each has been invited to address the issues identified his area of interest in return correspondence to the DCI. 0 NIO/GPF also assembled briefing books for the DCI and SACEUR in preparation for their meeting on 14 December. NIO/Strategic Programs testified on 8 December on MX to the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. He was joined by Gen. Marks (ACSI/AF) and of DIA, Chairman of the DCI's Weapons and Space Systems Intelligence mmittee. II. Interagency Papers An IIM on the impact of modernization on the Jordanian military was approved by C/NIC on 6 December and disseminated today. We plan to tr to coordinate draft estimates next week on the high-technology arms market If then cleared by the DCI, they will be ready for an NFIB meeting the following week. Of Special Interest This Week Chairman, NIC met with weather in the USSR producing bumper crops over the next several years, and also that improvements in Soviet agriculture are very unlikely because of problems in industrial-sector support to agriculture. a specialist in agricultural economics and the Soviet - Among other things, he suggested the possibility of better economy. 25X1 25X1 C/NIC attended sessions of Fred Ikle's Defense Policy Board, which included an interesting discussion of problems in DOD's management of technological transfer. NIO/At Large (Hans Heymann) paid a two-day visit to headquarters to discuss its collection activities and how t ese might be strengthened. A/NIO/AL 0 briefed Sen. Mathias and Arch Roberts (HFAC staffer) on the Pakistani nuclear program. Sen. Mathias asked for periodic followup briefings on the subject. A/NIO/AL also hosted a briefing by Rodney Jones (Georgetown) on defense planning and nuclear proliferation and participated in the first session of the Wilson Center's core seminar on proliferation. A/NIO Africa attended an IG meeting at State on the possible sale of a Boeing commercial aircraft to Ethiopia. This subject, a contentious one, may result in a SIG-IEP meeting shortly. NIO/East Asia gave a talk on Chinese foreign policy at the National War College and convened the monthly luncheon meeting of East Asia Intelligence Community managers. A memo was also prepared for the DCI on DO/EA clandestine reporting on Sino-Soviet relations and preparations were made for a meeting between the EA Intelligence Community managers and the DCI to discuss collection and production issues coming up in 1983. NIO/Latin America briefed USUN Ambassador Kirkpatrick on Central American developments. A/NIO/LA attended a three-day conference in Miami on the Caribbean Basin Initiative and met with some of the US and Caribbean government and private sector representatives there. He also hosted a briefing of US Ambassador Hart going to Ecuador. Approved For R ase 2007/0410 P83T00966R000100100022-6 SECRET a A/NIO/Near East-Sputh Asia attended an interagency seminar on Algeria on 5 December NIO/Strategic Programs briefed SecDef's Defense Policy Panel, run by Andy Marshall and Si Weiss, on the Soviet ABM program. Members present included Gen. John Vogt, Charles Silberman, Fred Hoffman, Albert Wohlstetter, and Charles Herzfeld. NIO/Warning and A/NI0/W briefed Diane LaVoy of the HPSCI staff on 9 December on the review of national intelligence warning and the new DC ID. IV.
