Hansen) FROM Legislative Counsel SUBJECT: DATE: 20 May 1952 The attached clipping from the Washington Star of 12 May is self-explanatory. You will recollect that'the Committee staff requested us to give them a copy of the Yale University study at the time that the President commented on it in issuing his security order and I rejected their request. In the course of a formal in- vestigation into the entire security problem, however, and par- ticularly any investigation into the best methods for protecting military information without depriving the public of information they should have, the Committee may renew their request for release of the Yale study, as well as information as to how CIA handles the problem of public information. Fivekenators to Probe: Eff News Security Order By the Associated Press A special Senate subcommittee is expected to undertake' an in vestigation into the effect of Presi- dent` 'Truman's controversial se- curity order on 'Government news. The committee will include Sen- ators Moody,. Democrat, of Michi- gan; Monroney, Democrat, of Oklahoma, `ai-d Schoeppel, Repub- lican, of ; Kansas, and two others yet to be named. Chairman Hoey of the Senate Investigations Committee is tol name the other two members of the group. The inquiry ; was. proposed by ISenator Moody, who was a news- paperman here until his appoint- ment as Senator last year. He suggested the investigation should cover these points: 1. Whether any censorship is depriving the public of informa- tion to which it is entitled. 2. The application of the se- curity order and its effect on the ? dissemination of public informa- tion. 3.
