The Agency's Auditor-in-Chief, as he was called from January 1953
to Fe 1955, remained attached during that period to the immediate
office of the DOA. and was located first (as of January 1953) adjacent
to the DP/A in nearby South Building and later (by October 1953) at 2210
Street. Along with this staff section, the DO/A group also had a )
'operate office for audits, called the Audit Office (AO) and located in
Building, where headquarters audits, in particular, were presumably
handled. Finally, the 1)/A had a field auditing organization, whose
relationships to the Auditor-1n4hief and to the Audit Office (as well
as to the no/P, the DCI? and the IP, among others) remain to be further
identified and explained, historically.
After the February 1955 reorganization of the np/A group into the
DID/S group, the Auditor-in.Chief was renamed Chief, Audit Staff, and
reappointed to the immediata_aifice of the DD/S. Shortly thereafter his
staff was: re*located in East Building (the old Administration %Jiang)
where most of the rest of the immediate office of the 11)/S was located.
The Chief, Audit Staff, remained part of 0/1)1)3 until about October 1956,
ehen the position disappeared from the 0/DDS section of the Agency direc-
tory.

The Audit Staff as a whole apparently resulted from a merger of three
auditing elements in the Ageneys (1) the Auditor...in-Chief, ofmk, and
his immediate assistants, renamed Chief, Audit Staff, in February 1955;
(2) the Audit Office (AO), which was renamed the nHeadquarte .
