The unbleached rnagnesium-bisulfite pulp Is character-
ized by high yield and high strength. When bleached
with the sequence chlorlne-alkalt-chlorine dioxide, a
large part of the high yield is lost. The optimum yield
of bleached pulp Is about 50% compared with 47 to 48%
for sulfur dioxide-calclum-sulfite pulp. Magnesium-
b1sulfite pulp retains its good strength after bleaching.
Tbe bleached pulp is somewhat more difficult to beat ow.. .1 T-h.1-1 S-1-
than the unbleached, but it has the same high breaking
and bUTSt strength as the unbleached pulp. which Is com

In tMe essay. the theories or tearing strength are re-
vievied, with emphasis an the theory of Van den Akker.
The factors determining the tearing strength are of two
types; the fibre properties, such as fibre length and
strength. and the paper microstructural factors.
Among the latter. f1bre bindings and paper extensibility
are considered to be of particular importance. The In-
fluence of these two types of factors on paper tearing
strength Is Illustrated by some simple experiments de-
signed to check the validity of current theories. The
