It reviews all requests and proposals for the punch _.= _ or le w 3e of, ADP equipment and syaterils and makes re-co endations for action to be taken thereon. 2. The All.? Staff is orgaa.nized into two divisions; the Intelli- gence Division, s.'nich serves the DD/I Area, and the S ort Division u rich serves the Office of the Cc t ^oller and the DD/rS Area. DD/P r quire nts are handled by the Chief and Deputy Chief with the assis- tance of members of the DD/-7 and DD/3 Divisions as required. 3. Current programs of the Support Division and the Intelligence Division can be briefly dF:scribed as follows: a. T n- Sup;-sort Tv ision serves the components of the DD/S Area, that is Pleclzcl, .G__iunic :tuns, Logistics, Personnel, Security and Training, and the Office of the Comptroller; DCI. These computer procedures were for several Arm.:sons e .'ablished in part by a direct conversion frc: punched-carte; procedures and do not make full use of the cancbilities of the 501 Computer. The Support Division is now rev-sewing these procoduro: in con.lunction with a study of the total requirsiiients of each of these com- pon nts . As a result of this work, the present procedures will be up-c cted and extended to meet the total require snts of each co monent . Fu them ore, the procedures &,--eloped for one corconent will be integrated with those of the other cv moments wa never feasible. Analo f Da .a Aa alysis P'_noto~;r :ie tric Calculations Mechanical Translation of language (2) The application of ADP methods to the problems listed above are much n ore difficult to solve than those found in the DD/S Area. The reason for this is that administrative tyy problems have been mechanized in vary- Ing degrees for so,;.ae The intelligence problems, with the exception of straight f or-mard mathematical computation, have not been fully mechanized and there is little, if any, prior experience on which to draw. (3) While the Agency has v cla more progress than any other Agency in the intelligence field in applying machine s,thods to the indexin and retrieval of docents , no ADP system for the indexing and retrieval of the infor .- tional content of cocu,~nts has as yet been developed. This is also true of omen problems in the field of intelli- gence analysis. To irr)1emmnt such a system my require: research and devolo_7 : ent effoirt on the part of equi ; .ent manufacturers to produce unique types of machines for the system. (5) It is, therefore, evident that the major effort of the Intelligence Divis.on for the next .few years will be to bring into bein{?'; a neehanized Information Retrieval System which will mcct the needs of our Research Intelli- gence Analysts. (6) There are, however, other problems in the Intelli- gence Area which cc.n be more easily sold than the infor- i ..ation Retrieval nrcislcm. These problems are not too diffi- cult to define ar O are, in the twain, concerned with compu- tation of data, v.-ri yE3es, statistics, updating of tables and the like. Tip Irt~lli:~'nce Division has identified a?rproximately 15 of these -irobieus which are called "Special Projects." Scme of these have been fully developed and are being processed by corr.. juters on a regular schedule. The other pro.lects are in v ryingg stages of completion of m .chine pros; ssing. (7) In addition to the above established pros of -vork, the Intelligence Division is always on call to serve the DD/I offices or, any matter pertaining to ADP methods. It. In the DDT Area, the "Wa1r ut" system for automatic storage and retrieval of documents throe.' h the use of micr hotographic techniques is far advanced. Special, equil,.eZnt designed for this pur- pose will be delivered in Janu?.ry 1963. These machines will be com- plemented later by a unique r Agnetic tee-" index r.,nchine which will be used to automatically pwrforn nay, -; trace ornerations. Studies are also being made to apply cum-, techniques to operational problems. 5. The DD/R may require some t -,e of electronic equipment for the FLINT program. 6. NPIC now has two Arras Cor`:_autors for photogrametrio compu- tations..- These machines will be replaced by a more sophosticated com- puter in January 1963. The Task i orce Oesires to call attention to the fact that the developm.cn?t of automatic data processing systems within the Agency over the next few years is going to result in heavy demands for personnel cud stoney. The Task Force believes that these systems stoul d be continually reviewed to assure the Agency the maximum benefits
