Herewith is a copy of our report to the Congress on
potential savings by elimination of the requirements for
registration, titling, and inspection of Govern^ent-owned
motor vehicles based in Washington, D.C.
We reviewed about 97 percent of the District of Columbia
records of inspection of Government-owned vehicles for in-
spection year 1963. Our review showed that, on the first
inspection, the District of Columbia rejected about 26 per-
cent of the Government-owned vehicles and about 16 percent
of your Agency's vehicles.
As stated in the enclosed report, adequate agency in-
spection and maintenance programs will not only promote
vehicle safety in the District of Columbia without the ex-
pense of a duplicate inspection by the Department of Motor
Vehicles, but also contribute to the safety of Government-
owned vehicles throughout the Nation.
Sincerely yours,
Comptroller General
.of the United States
The Honorable John A. McCone
Director, Central Intelligence Agency
