(1_,V/S&T #4166-6) 1. Last fial the former Director of Computer Services offered the I *rector of Medical Services the opportunity to participate in an experiment using the Automatic Language Processor to tratscribe venom of Pelichistric interview from stenograph tape to hard copy. I he Office at vtedical Services was Aeaset to have the opportunity to participate in this experiment and would be ece?ally pleased to take advantage of whatriver opportunity obey exist for continuirg the experimentation. In general, the eysteth has worked well for our purpmes and while we find that there is still a -moderate perceatage of error it is protably not greater than we would expect from an inexper !laced typist. 2. On an average, we have about 40 reports a week which are colleted at the rate of about four a day by the Office of Compumr Services in the torn of dictsphone tape. 'Me reports are transcribed in your office from the clic:tailbone tape to etenograph tape and then processed by the Automatic Language Processor. We have tio inibrmation about the cost to you for zlie time of the sortotypist or the ALP. We estimate, however, that dila service sives us about one-half ta two- thirds of a man-week each week for the time it vvolld take a typist to tratiscribe directly from the dictaphone tape to typed copy. Considering the time of the sterotypiat and the computer, I suspect that there is a significant cost at vantage to the direct manual method of trnrisc-iption. ibwever, if the ALP service were to be discontinued it would certainly have a seriols effect upon our ability to keep our workload current. 3. A canvass of other Support components ha; not developed any addition& Interest. 'Me Office of Personnel has panicipated in some very limited =pert - mentation with the Automatic Laqt,,uage ilocessur -hor transcription of stanograph motes. In this case, they used their own stenotypist who has not been specially trained for the ALP atui they have fourd the spate n less than satisfactor. for their purposes. In short, while we wrnld like to continue tn participate in any experimentation and use the service 1,1 t rather limited way if you conaue to offer it, we d3 not have a requirement which could be used to support a justification for retaining or acquiring in Automatic L.anguage Process:4i.
