Approved For Release 20031 c : - -0078"0a 3000P0032-9 3 MAY 1966 SUBJECT: Computer-Assisted Instruction 1. A demonstration of computer-assisted instruction was given by IBM in the Office of Computer Services on Wednesday, 27 April 1966. Present were: 25X1 25X1 and one or two others. 25X1 2. of the Office of Computer Services described briefly a pro- grammed instruction training course for key punch operators which is available in the Agency but with which we do not yet have a great deal of experience. The course uses a film strip which can be shown frame by frame as in slide projection or can be speeded up and shown at a rate of several frames per second somewhat like animated motion pictures. The speed of projection is controlled by a program film strip controlled by the instructor. This is used in the course principally to improve the key punching speed of the student by flashing on the screen for gradually decreasing intervals of time information which is to be key punched. 3. A second part of the demonstration was offered by representatives of IBM. The demonstration involved a typewriter console, a data phone con- nection with an IBM computer at Yorktown Heights, New York, and Joe Becker's secretary. By dialing a telephone number in Yorktown Heights, the console was connected with the computer. By typing the identification of the console station with a particular code identifying the typist as a "licensed" inquirer the right program is called into action. Whether accidentally or deliberately, the first identification given to the computer was wrong and the computer refused to respond by typing back a rejection, thereby demonstrating the file protection capability of centrally located computers. The program demon- strated was German language instruction. Mr. Becker's secretary was the student who had never before had any exposure to the German language. It was a very interesting demonstration but we were not able to get a very precise Approved For Release 2003/04/29: CIA-RDP84-0 CONNOENTIAL downgrading and declasslficatlan Approved For Release 1441 D 1tiAP84-00780 R001300060032-9 definition of the level of competence to which a student might be taken by use of this technique. The IBM representative suggested a person to contact if information is wanted in greater depth about the course itself, methods of developing the precise logic of language instruction for a computer program, or other details. 25X1 Special Assistant to the Deputy Director for Support SA-DD/S:RHW:deg (2 May 66) Distribution: Orig - DD/S Subject 1 - DD/S Chrono Approved For Release 2003/04/29 : CIA-RDP84-00780R001300060032-9 A
