LOGNOTE -- Chief, Operations Group, 29 June 1980
ISLAMABAD--Roach and I met on 29 June with Ambassador Hummel .
in Islamabad. He continued to express his support for our projected
operation. He now noted that there definitely was not space for us in
the compound (I had been warned about that earlier by the Admin Officer)
and that we would have to locate in a residence. We discussed the
possibility of combining our operations space with a residence for our
staff officer. We decided that this would probably be the best route
because of the shortage of housing and the fact our operation does not
require a full house--there are no apartments.
The Ambassador said that he had no problem in getting the approval of
the Secretary General of the NFA for our projected monitoring operation
and he made available a copy of the note he presented to him describing
our work. He also said that it would be very helpful if some arrangement
could be made to send highly selected items--such as Moscow comment on
Afghanistan--to-the mission for passing to the ROP. I noted that some
arrangement could probably be worked out and we could develop selection
criteria at the proper time. In regard to our meeting with the General
Manager of the PTT, he told me that he wanted me to initiate the discussion
by making it clear that he had received the approval of the ROP MFA for.
