SUBJECT Proposed Federal Information Processing
Standard (FIPS)
1. Attached is a copy of a proposed FIPS entitled,
"Password Usage." This proposed standard defines ten factors to
be considered in the design, implementation and use of access
control systems that are based on passwords. Unfortunately, the
appendix to this proposed standard was not included in the
package sent by National Bureau of Standards. We have placed an
order for the appendix, and when available, we will forward
copies to interested components.
2. Your review of this document and any comments you may
have are welcomed by NBS. We are particularly interested in your
comments regarding the Applicability and Implementation sections.
3. Any comments you wish to provide should be submitted to
ODP Management Staff, Attention: I Room 2D0105,
Headquarters. Please provide your comments by 28 September 1981,
so that a consolidated Agency response can be prepared for NBS.
