C. 20505 Dear Sir: It has cone to our' attention that ,,,our agency may be in the oossession of a simulator packago that will allow C". 301 computer pro grams to be processed on an I ,II 360 computer. Our RCA 301 computers were rather uniquely configured and these programs are currently processed with a special Spectra 70/35 emulator. The configuration was as follows: one RCA 381 six-pack tape unit with Sense Read Error Enhance- ment, the standard RCA hodel 333 drum printer, an I.3i 1402 card reader/punc_,z and. an --).CA 1-Iodol 3!485 seven track tape unit which was hard-wired to accept instructions intended for an IBM Model 729-IV tape unit. It is possible that this agency's flexibility in mai.:inr future plans would be greatly enhanced if this simulator package could be adapted to handle our RCA 301 programs. Should your agency be willing to share this simulator with us, we would first review it to determine the extent of the modifications required. Your office could either furnish the name and phone number of your responsible analyst or make direct contact with the Systems Support Branch of the Bureau of Data Processing on (301) 591+-7567. Your assistance and cooperation in this matter would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely -,,,ours, Harry 0 Acting Director Fur. eau of Data Processing g Approved For Release 2002/01/08 : CIA-RDP84-00933R000300260005-8 Talk r o F~q e R;/q i PIP ~8 84~ PR $ cessing., Social Security Administration (SSA) to SMIS-DC, 17 April 1974 SSA processes requests for 6 million social security cards a year. It issues 28 million checks a month to beneficiaries, and makes 4 million changes a month to 220 million people records. There are 1 million changes a month to 22 million Medicare records. There are 10',000 people in the Bureau of Data Processing,, 2,000 of them directly engaged in data processing. SSA has 9400 computer programs. There are two IBM 370/165s, 13 360/65s, two 1108s and 30 or 40 360/30s in a -four-acre installation-,_ SSA has 240,000 reels in the tape library - 13,000 are mounted nightly. One computer is dedicated to keeping .track of the tape library. Mr. Hanna said that mass storage does not exist on a cost-effective basis. SSA needs 100 billion bytes of storage, and will Install it in the new computer building in 1977. SSA is using mass storage now, but it is not true mass storage. The new building will have a three-dimensional layout to minimize cable lengths. SSA does not expect to put any of it's existing equipment in the new building. SSA has an advanced communications system with 450 terminals, which will increase to 1,000. One ASP support processor drives 4 mains. There is one job chain of 52 serial, dependent jobs; and a job net in which one job releases 9 jobs. IBM says that SSA is at the leading edge of the technology. Hanna says there will be fewer operators needed in future, and a higher order of operator skills will be required. He sees a future need for a combination operator/programmer. SSA has an excellent program to train operators in-house. Approved For Release 2002/01/08 : CIA-RDP84-00933R000300260005-8
