System Acquisition Phase Prime Contract - The highlight of TRWs activity for the month of January was the Tnitia.l Design Peview (IDR) for Block 1-Increment 1 which was held at TRW's SAFE Development Facility (DF) on 19-22 January 1981. The purpose of the IDR was to allow the Government to review TRW's progress in the Block 1 design of the SAFE System at a detailed design level. CSPO participants considered the review a useful and productive effort. A separate report is being written which will outline the topics of discussion along with issues and problems raised at the review and the action items assigned to resolve them. Other areas of accomplishment included: - System Engineering -- The Systems Engineering effort centered on the revision and updating of various system design specifications including: Revision B of the System Requirements Specification, the revision of the System Design Specification, Revision B of the SAFE C & D to External Systems Interface Specification, and the Intersubsystem Message Interface Control Document. New input/output models were incorporated into the System Performance Analysis simulator and a draft of the Reliability, Availability, Maintainability (RAM) Report was completed. - Subsystems Development -- In addition to preparing for and conducting the Block 1 Increment 1 IDR, design of the Block 1 set of system services continued and Block 1 Increment 2 activities were initiated. In the Block 3 area, the IDF performance threads were updated, the Database Management System design continued, the AIF/DIOBS Database Design Report was revised, the top-level SAFE D Operational Concept Definition was completed and work continued on the Conversion Requirements Specification. - Communications -- The installation of the coaxial cable for the wideband system in the CIA Headquarters Building continues to proceed on schedule. Other communications activities included the preparation of a draft wideband bus communications integration and test plan, completion of draft Bus Interface Unit (BIU) and Processor Interface Unit (PIU) specifications, completion of BIU hardware design and the initiation of the preliminary design of the PIU. The design of the production modem is nearing completion. Approved For Release 2003/12/18 : CIA-RDP84-00933R000500090025-3 Approved Release 2003/12/18 : CIA-RDP84-003R000500090025-3 - ADPE/Materiel -- TRW began acceptance testing of the first Burroughs B6930 midi-level computer delivered to the DF in December. Burroughs personnel continued the installation and checkout of the second B6930 and the B7821 global computer. Negotiations on the Burroughs ADPE sub- contract were completed and the contract was signed on 8 January and forwarded to the CSPO for approval. B. Government Furnished Terminals -- The Government sent 41 Delta Data SAFE terminals to the TRW Development Facility in January to supplement the 7 terminals previously shipped. One more terminal has yet to be delivered. Most of these terminals have been checked out and are now operational. One terminal has been wired to the'B6930. These terminals will eventually be hooked up to the Burroughs equipment via a wideband cable bus-now being installed at the DF. C. SAFE User Language Development - As part of the ---------------- ------- - continuing review of the work leading to the publication of the SAFE User Language (SUL) Specification, which will be delivered in February 1981, the Government developed a com- prehensive scenario that will simulate significant aspects of the SUL design. This simulation is expected to provide valuable user feedback on alternate design options in TRW's approach to user interfaces. D. Conversion - The Government reviewed the first draft of TRW's Conversion Requirements Specification and provided comment to TRW. This document identifies databases to be converted as well as applications programs to be written based on existing or predicted output specifications. For DIA the documentation will provide a concept of operations which details the SAFE system support for specific functional activities. E. Message Analysis - Work on the update of the OSI Data Format Study which identifies electrical messages input to SAFE by source and type and further decomposes the messages into various zones of information. Work also progressed on providing the rules by which SAFE documents will be uniquely identified in the system. This has been a joint CIA/DIA activity and to this point has been characterized by significant commonality. System Acquisition Phase Prime Contract - The emphasis during February will be on the continuing system and subsystem design effort. A major portion of this effort will be on the preparation of the design documentation to be reviewed at the Preliminary Detailed Design Review (PDR) scheduled for mid- March. The PDR has been combined with the Block 1 Increment 1 Detailed Design Review (DDR) and the Block 1 Increment 2 Initial Design Review (IDR). A major part of the Block 3 effort, establishing conversion requirements, will continue. The Con- version Requirements Review has been rescheduled to 2 March 1981 Approved For Release 2003/12/18 : CIA-RDP84-00933R000500090025-3 -2- Approvedtrl- Release 2003/12/18: CIA-RDP84-0N03R000500090025-3 The Development Facility will become an operational computer center with the completion of acceptance tests on the first Burroughs B6930. The installation of the coaxial cable in the CIA Headquarters Building will continue. Engineering design and test of hardware interfaces to cryptographic equipment and wideband communications will also continue. B. SAFE Steering Committee Meeting - The quarterly meeting of the SAFE Steering Committee will be held on 25 February 1981 at the CIA Headquarters Building. Wideband Cable Components - Preliminary engineering testing of the cable installation at the CIA Headquarters has turned up some faulty tap hardware. The problem is being investigated by the TRW installation team.
