Approved For Release 2001/07/27 : CIA-R 000100050014-3 CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY WASHINGTON, D.C. 20505 MEMORANDUM FOE: Rome Air Development Center, AFSC Griffis Air Force Base, New York 13440 ATTENTION: BJEC : &MY/D. Brantingbam/330-2028 Discontinuance of CIA's Intelligence Publications Index (I?!) REFERENCE: RADC letter of 4 April 1968 addressed to CIA (Central Reference Service) 1. The development of alternative means of access to intelligence publications by the Central Reference Service is still in process. Included In our program are a major reorganization from functional to area oriented components; a shift from multiple, specialized indexes to a keyword and shallow classification system; and, the development of computer programs to afford a variety of searches and list-outs of our index records upon demand. We estimate that the system will not be fully operational for another six months and suggest that you submit examples of specific requirements on or about 1 October of this year. 2. Our decision to discontinue the Intelligence Publications Index was based in part on the substantially duplicative Register of Intelligence Publications (RIP) produced by ILIA. It is our understanding that DIA plans to expand the next Issue of RIP to include the publications of DOD commands. JOHN K.
