ali Approved For Release 2001/03/06 : Ci*t84-00951 R000200060032-1 LC had long-range plans for studying the feasibility of converting its card catalog to computers, and since an increasing number of libraries were converting to its system in order to be able to utilize the IC printed cards for their catalogs, the decision was made to convert to LC. The recataloging, begun in 1959, was estimated to take ten years, but ~;~rrrnPn ah1aMz~.,a;_C._.Lbra+trter}vgers completed 25X1 B tKe'feb by October 1964. In the course of their work the CIA Library catalogers found several areas where the IC system of classification was neither in sufficient depth nor specialized enough to satisfy CIA needs. Adaptations were prepared and used by the library and issued as a publication, Subject Headings and Classed Schedules for pr-i r to d- ,ca rdi i rl.tc the ca to l dig by a .tho r,{ usually Ieveraf-iub.jegfts. CIA Library also initiated a separate- catalog where the printed cards were arranged by?_are.aas-wel.l, in view of the increasing emphasis on the arrea approach in `CIA L1 OCR policy with regard to the use of computers for retrieval o open literature was to watch developments in this area but to concentrate on 4 intelligence documents processing.
