The Central Reference Service is one of nine major of-
fices w:~_thin the Directorate for Intelligence. Cts mission
is to provide whatever information Agency components require
To this end) CRS acts as the Agency's document recipient and
disseminator for all intelligence issuances except for cer-
tain sensitiv(N operational data, providing both CIA and
non-CIA offices with copies of appropriate Agency reports,
and in addition providing CIA offices with reports received
from other agencies; serves as the institutional memory of
the Directorate for Intelligence, as well as for much of the
Agency and the intelligence corrimunity, by storing information
reports and finished intelligence on microfilm or in hard
copy for later reproduction and distimination on request; acts
as the US govermaent's representative in administering a
world-wide publications procurement program; collects)
maintains files on, and services requests for personality
photography and motion pictures; maintains files and ser-
vices requests on foreign industrial installations; maintains
the CIA Library as a general open-source reference library;
and is responsible for the maintenance of files and the
production of positive biographic intelligence on all foreign
personalities except military.
CRS' biographic services and production are perhaps its
