According to the Rritlsh press, Polish party officials have
said that there may he it meeting of the Central Cotnuittee later
this week, the first since the declaration of martial law. This
may imply a increased role for the party which has been in the
background during the first several weeks of martial law. The
meeting may also clarify the fate of regional party leaders and
wiII surely provide a forum for font t ing between party
h.trdl iners, moderates, and liberals.
Reuters reports that the sixth bulletin issued by Solidarity
and reaching the West on 4 lanuary stressed that there was
increased resistance within the army to the crackdown on
Solidarity. Through not confirmed, the bulletin states that
clashes occurred between the army and police at flydgosir7, that
hundreds of army of f icrrs have turned in their ('orrenttni%t party
cards, and that 14 miners were killed by security forces at the
Manifest Lipcowy Colliery in Silesia. Meanwhile, Solidarity
