SUBJECT: Tasking for the Senior Interagency Group -
International Economic Policy (SIG-IEP) to
Conduct an Assessment of any Measures
Announced by Polish Authorities on or About
July 22, 1982 (U)
The SIG-IEP is directed to conduct a prompt review of possible
actions by the U.S. in response to any measures announced by the
Polish authorities on or about July 22, 1982. This assessment
should focus on the political significance of any announced
measures in relation to my three objectives for advancing recon-- ~
ciliation in Poland; the release of political prisoners; the '
lifting of martial law; and the reestablishmeizt of a dialogue
with Solidarity and the Church. The SIG-IEP should also provide
me with a set of options and recommendations concerning available
reciprocal measures of corresponding significance to any measures
announced by the Polish authorities. (S)
