MOZAMBIQUE: Insurgency Expands
The South African - backed National Resistance Move-
ment has expanded operations from central and southern
Mozambique to the north. The apparent shift of substan-
tial numbers of insurgents has met little resistance from
the Mozambican military, which is stretched thin in the
north. Recent military reports suggest that the govt
man-1- is lanning to reinforce its garrisons there.
Comment: The guerrillas' ability to move into a new
area suggests that South Africa has stepped up its aid.
The expansion of insurgent operations in the relatively
populous northern region increases the likelihood that
President Machel will feel compelled to request combat
forces from neighboring Tanzania and perhaps from Cuba.
