Approved For Release 2007/12/28: CIA-RDP84B00148R000300790035-0 Breakdown of events in Lebanon on 4 & 5 June 1982 Israeli aircraft bombed Palestinian refugee camps at Sabra, Shatila and Burj Al Barajneh as well as targets in the heavily Palestinian populated Fakhrani District on southwestern outskirts of Beirut. (U) Israeli aircraft also attacked Fatah combat training school and ammunition depot located at Beirut sports stadium. (U) Raids on Beirut prompted Palestinians to respond by shelling settlements inside the Israeli northern border in region of Galilee panhandle and western Galilee. (U) Following the rocket attacks, the Israelis launched a second round of airstrikes, this time against Palestinian artillery and rocket positions in southern Lebanon. (U) Israelis also returned artillery fire from inside Israel, shelling targets near An-Nabatiyah, Az-Zahran-i and Tyre. (U) Cross-border fighting continued during the night. (U) During early morning hours, in response to sporadic rocket attacks, on Qiryat Shimona, Israelis resumed artillery activity and air strikes. They hit PLO positions in An-Nabatiyah, Tyre and Damur. (U) Subsequently, Israeli aircraft launched attacks on PLO targets in areas of Sidon, Beaufort Castle, and the Arnun plateau in Southern Lebanon. (U) Palestinians resumed shelling of Galilee panhandle, which continued into early hours of 6 June. (U) PLO also shelled Lebanese towns of Marjiyun and Qulayah, where Israeli army and Christian militias had positioned artillery batteries.
