Casey Director Central Intelligence Agency Washington, D.C. 20505 Dear Bill: The Subcommittee on East Asian and Pacific Affairs, which I have had the honor to chair during the 97th Congress, has recently completed oversight hearings on U. S. policies and programs in Southeast Asia. Our concentration was primarily on the member countries of the Association of Southeastern Asian Nations--one of?the most important areas of the world for the United States in my view. The record of the hearings has just been published and I attach a copy for your information. My concluding observations will be found beginning on page 137. I hope you will find them.and the testimony of the iitnesses to be of interest. I want to take this opportunity to-thank you for the major contribution which you made to the hearings. You and our other witnesses highlighted our problems and prospects in Southeast Asia in a very articulate and forthright manner for which I am most grateful. I intend to remain involved in one capacity or another in our activities in Southeast Asia after I retire from the Senate next January. I would, therefore, welcome any comments on th.e hearings which you may feel inclined to make. Sincerely, S. I. Hayakawa SIH:bbm Approved For Release 2007/07/02 :CIA-RDP84B00148R000400810012-1
