MEMORANDUM FOR: Director of Personnel
Policy, Planning, and Management
Deputy Director of Personnel
Policy, Planning, and Management
for Recruitment and Placement
SUBJECT Professional Applicant Test Battery (PATB)
REFERENCE DDA 81-0707/6
1. We note in paragraph 3 of reference that the DDA has requested
the Office of Medical Services to conduct a component survey to determine
if their requirements for the PATB continue. Prior to receipt of reference,
we had already reviewed the component recruitment guidelines to determine
which ones require the test in the selection process. We learned that of
the 114 active guidelines, 57 positions require the test, 51 do not and
6 are question-marks or part-time. The attached list provides a breakdown
by component and occupation.
2. Our experience indicates that it takes the components three to
four weeks to obtain the PATB results from Psychological Services Staff.
Once the test results are received, the components have an additional
two weeks to make a hiring decision. It is our perception that even though
the entire process extends the applicant waiting time approximately five to
six weeks, senior management considers the PATB to be a valuable tool in
applicant selection and worth the additional processing time.
