1. SIGNIFICANCE: AN M1981/2 TANK WAS IDENTIFIED FOR THE FIRST
TIME AT MINSK HQ MTZ DIV/ARMY BKS AL 1/SA-6 FAC ON IMAGERY OF
THIS IMAGERY PROVIDED THE BEST LOOK ON SATELLITE
IMAGERY OF THIS TANK TO DATE. (SWN)
2. REMARKS: ONE M1981/2 TANK WAS IMMEDIATELY IN FRONT OF A
VEHICLE STORAGE SHED IN A MOTORIZED RIFLE REGIMENT WHICH WAS
RECENTLY RESTRUCTURED INTO A PROBABLE BRIGADE. THE GUN TUBE ON
THE TANK WAS IN TRAVEL-LOCK OVER THE REAR AND A CANVAS COVER
HAD BEEN PARTIALLY REMOVED, EXPOSING THE RAISED REAR ENGINE
DECK. (SWN)
WHILE SIMILAR IN SIZE TO T-72 SERIES TANKS (SPECIFICALLY THE
M1980/1 AND M1981/3), THE M1981/2 TANK HAS SEVERAL
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS. THE MOST PROMINENT OF THESE
FEATURES IS THE RAISED REAR ENGINE DECK. ADDITIONALLY, THE:
M1981/2 TANK HAS A GRADUAL DOWNWARD SLOPE OF BOTH THE FRONT AND
REAR FENDERS AND A LARGE, ROUND RELATIVELY FLAT TURRET, WHICH
IS SIMILAR TO THE NEWER TURRET SEEN ON THE M1981/3.
MENSURATION FROM IMAGERY REVEALED THE TANK TO BE
METERS IN LENGTH. SWN
OTHER TANKS PRESENT IN THE SAME VEHICLE PARK INCLUDED T-72
SERIES TANKS PARKED IN OPEN STORAGE. FROM SATELLITE IMAGERY,
THE M1981/2 TANK HAD PREVIOUSLY BEEN CONFIRMED IN SMALL NUMBERS
AT ONLY NOVOGRAD-VOLYNSKIY ARMY BARRACKS AL 2
AND KOROSTEN ARMY BARRACKS AL 1 . A PROBABLE
M1981/2 TANK HAD ALSO BEEN OBSERVED AT MILOVICE ARMY BARRACKS
