SIGNIFICANCE: A RADICAL DEPARTURE FROM PREVIOUS SOVIET SPAA DESIGN MAY BE THE RESULT OF TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER. (SWN) 2. REMARKS: ._-ANALYSIS OF A ZSU-X SPAA SYSTEM AT DONGUZ WEAPONS CONFIGURED SIMILAR THE ZSU-X WAS IN THE ANTIAIRCRAFT ARTILLERY TEST POSITION , TEST AREA C, ON THE RADARS AND GUN TUBES WERE COVERED WITH A LIGHT-TONED TARPAULIN WHICH PROVIDED A CLEAR CONTRAST WITH THE DARKER TURRET AND CHASSIS. BOTH THE GEPARD AND ZSU-X HAVE A LONG RECTANGULAR TURRET, A RETRACTABLE SURVEILLANCE RADAR MOUNTED ON THE BACK, A TRACKING RADAR MOUNTED ON THE FRONT AND ONE GUN MOUNTED ON EACH SIDE OF THE TURRET. AN APPARENT DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO SYSTEMS IS THAT THE 35MM OERLIKON KDA CANNONS MOUNTED ON THE GEPARD APPEARED MUCH LONGER THAN THE GUNS ON THE ZSU-X. IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THE ZSU-X GUN TUBES HAVE NOT BEEN MOUNTED AND WHAT APPEARS TO BE THE GUNS ARE ACTUALLY THE BREECH ASSEMBLIES. (SWN) ANALYSTS COMMENTS -- THE CONFIGURATION ON THE ZSU-X IS A RADICAL DEPARTURE FROM PREVIOUS SOVIET SPAA DESIGNS. SINCE THE GEPARD HAD BEEN UNDER DEVELOPMENT SINCE 1965 AND FIELDED IN 1976, THIS MAY BE AN EXAMPLE OF TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER. THE SURVEILLANCE RADAR ON THE ZSU-X IS OF A NEW DESIGN AND MAY INCORPORATE TECHNOLOGY GAINED FROM THE GEPARD RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM. THE TRACKING RADAR MAY ALSO BE NEW, AND NOT MERELY AN UPGRADED GUN DISH RADAR AS WAS PREVIOUSLY SPECULATED. A RE-ANALYSIS OF THE TEST VAN USED DURING THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE ZSU-X SURVEILLANCE RADAR REVEALED THAT A BULBOUS OBJECT MOUNTED ON THE FRONT OF THE VAN COULD HAVE BEEN THE TRACKING RADAR. THIS OBJECT These notes have been prepared for briefing purposes only and should not be used for detailed analytical work.
