1. SIGNIFICANCE: AIRFIELD UPGRADING HAS BEEN COMPLETED, AND THE
RUNWAY IS ONCE AGAIN OPERATIONAL. (SWN)
2. REMARKS: THE AIRFIELD IMPROVEMENTS, IN PROGRESS SINCE MID-JUNE
1983, INCLUDE RESURFACING OF THE RUNWAY AND PARKING APRON. A
NEW PROBABLE RADAR MOUND AND A SECOND REVETTED SUPPORT AREA
HAVE ALSO BEEN CONSTRUCTED WEST OF THE MAIN SUPPORT AREA. THE
ARRIVAL OF ONE KUDU LIGHT TRANSPORT
INDICATES THAT THE RUNWAY IS OPERATIONAL. THIS IS THE FIRST
FIXED-WING AIRCRAFT OBSERVED HERE SINCE MID-JULY. A SMALL
UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT IS ON THE PROBABLE RADAR MOUND. THREE
CONSTRUCTION VEHICLES, INCLUDING AT LEAST ONE SCRAPER AND ONE
PROBABLE BULLDOZER, ARE LOADED ON THREE OF FOUR HEAVY-LIFT
TRANSPORTERS EAST OF THE MAIN SUPPORT AREA, PROBABLY IN
PREPARATION FOR REMOVAL OF THE EQUIPMENT FROM THE AREA. THE
NUMBER OF TRUCKS IN THE SUPPORT AREA, INCLUDING THE FOUR
HEAVY-LIFT TRANSPORTERS, HAS INCREASED FROM 15 TO 27 SINCE
(SWN)
NGIVA AIRFIELD, 25 NM NORTH OF THE ANGOLA-NAMIBIA BORDER, IS A
STAGING BASE FOR SOUTH AFRICAN FORCES OPERATING IN SOUTHERN
ANGOLA. (SWN)
