This report describes the Polish LP-10M surface-surveillance andl air-search radar system in Libya. This system, which incorporates the POST GATE radar, greatly enhances Libya's coastal surveillance and low-altitude air search capability. This report uses imagery through and includes one map and two photos. (S/WN) DISCUSSION 2. The LP-10M system integrates low-altitude air search, ocean-surface surveillance, and data processing. Each deployment consists of one POST GATE air-search radar site, collocated with a data processing site and usually set on the first high ground back from the coast, and two separate surface-surveillance radar sites on the shoreline up to 35 kilometers (km) on either side of the POST GATE site. Nine such deployments have been identified along the Libyan coastline since May 1980 (Figure 1); these are the first LP-10M systems seen outside Poland. (S/WN) Air Search 3. The POST GATE radar is identified by a rotating parabolic antenna atop a 24-meter high steel-lattice tower, mounted on a flatbed trailer. Each POST GATE radar site (Figure 2) houses two such antennas, a data processing center between them, a power supply building, six trailers, two van trucks, and a central radio relay tower, used as a data link between the processing center and the two coastal surveillance sites. (S/WN) Surface Surveillance 4. LP-10M surface surveillance is performed by the two coastal surveillance sites, which, in Libya, are within 200 meters of the shoreline and 30 to 35 km on either side of the POST GATE site. Each surveillance site (Figure 3) consists of a surface-search radar ar)tenna and a radio relay antenna mounted on a 30-meter lattice tower, a power supply building, and a fuel tank. Additional POST GATE equipment has been observed in storage at Tarabulus, suggesting more deployments of the LP-10M system can be expected. Additional sites, judging from what appear to be gaps in coverage, will probably be in the Gulf of Sidra area. (S/WN) All applicable satellite imagery acquired from May 1980 through of this report.
