VLADIVOSTOK NAVAL BASE AND SHIP ARD 202, USSR (SWN)
1. SIGNIFICANCE: THE INDIA-CLASS AUXILIARY SUBMARINE (SSA), UNIT 1,
IS IN THE MID-STAGE OF CONSTRUCTION AT VLADIVOSTOK. (SWN)
2. REMARKS : THIS SUBMARINE HAS BEEN UNDERGOING MODIFICATION SINCE
DECEMBER 1982. TO DATE, THE RAISED DECK PLATING AND EQUIPMENT IN
THE TWO SUBMERSIBLE WELLS HAVE BEEN REMOVED. THE WELLS ARE
PROBABLY BEING ENLARGED FROM THEIR ORIGINAL ENGTII TO 25X1
15.0 METERS, THE LENGTH OF THE WELLS ON THE INDIA SSA,
UNIT 2. (SWN)
PRIOR TO MODIFICATION, UNIT 1 CARRIED TWO SUBMERSIBLES 25X1
(SEE INSET). THESE TWO SUBMERSIBLES REMAIN ON THE ADJACENT QUAY
(NOT ON GRAPHIC). WHEN THE MODIFICATION IS COMPLETE, UNIT 1 WILL
PROBABLY BE EQUIPPED WITH 12.0 METER SUBMERSIBLES LIKE THOSE
ASSOCIATED WITH UNIT 2. TWO 12.0 METER SUBMERSIBLES, PROBABLY
FOR THIS SUBMARINE WHEN THE MODIFICATION IS COMPLETE, ARE ON THE
QUAY AT THE NEARBY VLADIVOSTOK SUBMARINE BASE ULISA BAY 25X1
SEE INSET). (SWN) 25X1
THE TWO INDIA SSA ARE DIESEL-POWERED AUXILIARY SUBMARINES
DESIGNED FOR SALVAGE AND RESCUE OPERATIONS. UNIT 1 IS ASSIGNED
TO THE PACIFIC FLEET, WHILE UNIT 2 IS ASSIGNED TO THE NORTHERN
FLEET AND IS NORMALLY BASED AT URA GUBA SUBMARINE BASE F1 25X1
