SIGNIFICANCE: EVIDENCE OF SS-N-19 LAUNCH BY KIROV NUCLEAR-
POWERED GUIDED MISSILE CRUISER (CGN). (SWN)
2. REMARKS: BURN MARKS AROUND THE HINGED DOOR OF AN SS-N-19
ANTISHIP CRUISE MISSILE LAUNCHER ON KIROV CGN, UNIT 1, AT
SEVEROMORSK -NAVAL BASE ON INDICATED THAT A RECENT
LAUNCH HAD TAKEN PLACE. THE BURN MARKS WERE AROUND THE
STARBOARD, PORT AND AFT SIDES OF THE DOOR OF ONE OF THE 20
SS-N-19 LAUNCHERS. THE BURN MARKS WERE NOT PRESENT
WHEN FOUR OF THE SS-N-19 HINGED DOORS WERE OPEN. THIS
IS THE FIRST OBSERVATION OF BURN MARKS IN THE AREA OF THE
SS-N-19 LAUNCHERS ON A KIROV CGN. (SWN)
AN SS-N-19 CRUISE MISSILE WAS LAUNCHED IN THE NORTHERN FLEET
AREA (DEFSMAC DTG 201958Z JUL 83). THE KIROV CGN
WAS ABSENT FROM SEVEROMORSK ON IMAGERY OF THAT DATE. THE
OSCAR NUCLEAR-POWERED CRUISE MISSILE SUBMARINE (SSGN) IS THE
ONLY OTHER NAVAL COMBATANT EQUIPPED WITH THE SS-N-19 CRUISE
MISSILE. OSCAR SSGN, UNIT 1, THE ONLY OPERATIONAL UNIT OF THE
CLASS IS DEPLOYED IN THE NORTHERN FLEET AND WAS ALSO UNLOCATED
(SWN)
SS-N-19 ANTISHIP CRUISE MISSILES ARE CARRIED IN LAUNCH TUBES
ANGLED AT 45 DEGREES. THE MISSILE HAS A RANGE OF
APPROXIMATELY 260 NM. (SWN)
