1. SIGNIFICANCE: THE ZSU-I (NPIC INTERIM DESIGNATOR)
SELF-PROPELLED ANTIAIRCRAFT (SPAA) GUN, WHICH HAS BEEN
UNDERGOING TESTS AT THE DONGUZ WEAPONS AND ELECTRONIC PROVING
GROUND SINCE AT LEAST 1978, MAY NOW BE
DEPLOYED AT BALTIYSK NAVAL INFANTRY INSTALLATION. (SWN)
2. REMARKS:I _. , FOUR PROBABLE ZSU-I (ONE PLATOON), TWO
VE-ATTO-69S OF ZSU-23/4, TWO PLATOONS OF SA-13 LOW-ALTITUDE SAM,
AND ONE PLATOON OF FOUR ZSU-23/4 CHASSIS WITHOUT TURRETS WERE
IN THE SPAA MISSILE AND ARTILLERY BATTERY PARKING AREA OF THE
INSTALLATION. THE EQUIPMENT WAS ALSO PRESENT 1BUT
HAD B

ANALYST'S COMMENTS -- THE ZSU-I MAY BE A FOLLOW-ON TO THE
ZSU-23/4 SPAA GUN SYSTEM. IMAGERY INDICATED THAT IT HAS THE
ZSU-23/4 CHASSIS WITH A SLIGHTLY LARGER TURRET HAVING TWO
CLOSELY COUPLED GUN BARRELS, A RADAR SIMILAR IN APPEARANCE TO
THE GUN DISH (ZSU-23/4 RADAR), AND A RAISED PROJECTION TO THE
RIGHT OF THE RADAR THAT IS NOT PRESENT ON THE ZSU-23/4. THE
REASON THAT FOUR OF THESE ZSU-23/4 HAVE HAD THEIR TURRETS
REMOVED IS UNCLEAR; RETROFIT OF EXISTING ZSU CHASSIS AT THE
FACILITY IS ONE POSSIBILITY. (SWN)
THE PRESENCE OF THE THIRD PLATOON OF SPAA GUNS AND THE
POSSIBILITY OF A FOURTH IS PART OF THE ONGOING
REORGANIZATION/AUGMENTATION OF-THE NAVAL INFANTRY BRIGADE IN
THE BALTIC FLEET. (SWN)
