1, SIGNIFICANCE: AN E-II NUCLEAR-POWERED CRUISE MISSILE ATTACK
SUBMARINE (SSGN) HAS BEEN MODIFIED AT SEVERODVINSK SHIPYARD
YAGRY ISLAND. (SWN)
2. REMARKS: THIS SSGN, UNDERGOING OVERHAUL IN THE SOUTH BAY OF
WAS ROLLED OUT AND LAUNCHED
THE MODIFICATIONS TO THIS
SSGN INCLUDE THE REMOVAL OF THE BANK OF SS-N-3/12 CRUISE
MISSILE LAUNCHERS IMMEDIATELY AFT OF THE SAIL AND THE ADDITION
OF A PROBABLE VERY LOW FREQUENCY (VLF) BUOY HOUSING IN THAT
AREA. THE VLF BUOY HOUSING IS SIMILAR TO THE VLF BUOY HOUSING
ON THE HOTEL-CLASS COMMUNICATIONS, AUXILIARY SUBMARINE (SSQN).
SCAFFOLDING AND SHADOW PRECLUDED A DETAILED ANALYSIS OF THE
SUBMARINE. THE ARRANGEMENT OF THE TRANSFER DOLLIES REMAINING
ON THE NORTH LEDGE OF THE SHIP-LIFTING BASIN (NOT ON GRAPHIC)
INDICATES THAT THE MODIFIED E-II SSGN IS PROBABLY NOT EQUIPPED
WITH THE UNDERHULL APPENDAGE THAT WAS ADDED TO THE E-II
NUCLEAR-POWERED AUXILIARY SUBMARINE (SSAN). THE E-II SSAN WAS
CONVERTED AT YAGRY ISLAND BETWEEN 1976 AND 1979. (SWN)
