SIGNIFICANCE: A POSSIBLE INCREASED THREAT TO THE STRAITS
OF HORMUZ WAS POSED BY THE ARRIVAL OF ADDITIONAL NAVAL
COMBATANTS TO BANDAR ABBAS. (SWN).
2. { REMARKS:' ONE IRANIAN LA COMBATTANTE IIB (KAMAN) PTG AND
UNE FY 103 FFL WERE DEPLOYED AT BANDAR ABBAS PORT
FACILITIES SURU ON IMAGERY OF THE PF 103 FFL
ARRIVED IN PORT BETWEEN AND THE LA
COMBATTANTE TIB (KAMAN) PTG WAS OBSERVED IN THE ROADSTEAD
ON THESE SHIPS ARE NOT NORMALLY AT THIS
FACILITY AND MAY HAVE DEPLOYED FROM BUSHEHR NAVAL BASE
FOR OPERATIONS WITHIN THE STRAITS OF
HORMUZ. THE RE-LOCATION QF THESE NAVAL COMBATANTS TO THIS
MAJOR PORT FACILITY COULD INDICATE IRANIAN CONCERN OVER
OTHER NAVAL FORCES IN THE INDIAN OCEAN AREA OR POSSIBLY TO
CARRY OUT STATED THREATS TO CLOSE THE STRAITS OF HORMUZ TO
COMMERCIAL SHIPPING. OTHER NAVAL COMBATANTS (NOT
ANNOTATED) OBSERVED AT THIS PORT INCLUDED TWO SUMNER DDG,
THREE VOSPER FFV, TWO HENGHAM LST, ONE KANGAN AWT, AND AT
LEAST THREE PATROL BOATS. (SWN)
ONE BATTLE DDG, ONE BANDAR ABBAS AORL AND NINE PATROL
BOATS WERE ALSO IN PORT (NOT ON GRAPHIC). (SWN)
BANDAR ABBAS PORT FACILITIES SURU IS LOCATED IN SOUTHEAST
IRAN AND IN THE NORTHERN PORTION OF THE STRAITS OF
HORMUZ., (SWN)
