THE AIRFIELD WAS CONSTRUCTED ABOUT 1947 AND IS
BELIE'JE,D TO HAVE BEEN INTENDED FOR THE PRIVATE
USE OF KING FAROUK. IN 195k, IT WAS TAKEN OVER
BY THE EGYPTIAN AIR FORCE. THE NE/SW RUNWAY
WAS LENGTHENED AND NEW TAXIWAYS ADDED IN 1956/57.
FOR THE PAST SEVERAL YEARS TIE AIRFIELD HAS
GRADUALLY BEEN IMPROVED.

12-FISHBED OF THE 19Th FIGHTER SQUADRON AND 12

1. SIGNIFICANCE:
FIRST POST-STRIKE SYSTEM COVERAGE OF ABU SUWEIR
2. LOCATION: 8.6 NM W OF AL ISMAILIYAH AND 5 NM NNW OF ABU
SUWAYR AT 3034N 3206E.
3. REMARKS: ABU SUWEIR IS THE PRIMARY EGYPTIAN BEAGLE BASE.
4. COLLATERAL: ABtJ SUWEIR WAS A PRE-1939 RAF AIRFIELD EQUIPPED
WITH PERMANENT BUILDINGS AND FACILITIES FOR USE
AS A FLYING TRAINING SCHOOL. IN 1956, THE
AIRFIELD WAS HANDED OVER TO THE EGYPTIAN
Al TTHORITIES AND BECAME AN EGYPTIAN AIR FORCE
BASE.
