It was good to hear from you and get the rundown on what you
have been doing since retiring. That occasional "urge" to get
back into your old FBIS profession is certainly not unusual, and
is often rekindled, as you suggest, by conflict in one part of
the world or another.
FBIS has, and is, undergoing many changes these days as we
adapt to the changing wcrld and new technology. Since you left
we have opened several additional bureaus in the Far East, Middle
East, and Africa. Here in Headquarters, automation of the DAILY
REPORT and Wire is getting underway this summer, with our editors
preparing to turn in their pencils and green eyeshades for com-
puter-linked electronic keyboards. Closer to your old line of
work, we are now actively in the business of monitoring satel-
lite-relayed broadcasts. In short, it is an exciting and
challenging time for all of us in FBIS.
As for your offer, we have no requirement at this time for
assistance in the Florida area. Your old colleague,
is working for us as a part-time contract cruiser at Key West
Bureau. John has also retired and now lives in the Keys. We put
him on contract initially to train our new cruisers, but with
heightened interest in Cuban and Central American broadcasting we
have been using him-for a variety of tasks. We expect to renew
his contract this summer. Of course, we never know what lies
ahead, so we will keep your offer in mind.
Once again, it was nice hearing from you and learning that,
like most of our retirees, this interesting business of ours is
still in your blood. My best to you and Dottie.

I'm a former ' BI5 Cruising vIonitor who spent almost 27 with the
organization before taking an early retirement seven years ago at the
ripe young age of 45.
The events in Cuba, V Addle East, Latin America and the ]Falkland
islands seemed to have ignited a spark, especially the use of t%rl
Hermes by the British. The fik Hermes, the ship that many FBIS' per-
sonnel stationed in Cyprus in 1974 will. forever be grateful to for
their rescue operations on the ryr?enia Beach. I often think of what
I would do if this or that event happened and what we (Fills) would
have to do to cover the events.

I thought you and my former colleagues would like to know "whatever
happened" to at least one of your former employees. My wife Dottie and
I are enjoying "retired life" although both of us are working. We have
our own home in B;r_oward County, Florida just outside :est. Lauderdale. NTy
wife is a nurse and I'm Office Manager for a South Florida service com-
pany. We have been to Europe several. times, taken a number of cruises,
traveled around the country as well as enjoying South Florida's year
round Vacation atmosphere. On numerous occasions we have recalled the
many people and places we came into contact with during our career with
P'31
On occasion I feel the urge to "give the dial a twirl" but unfortur_
nately have only a small unprofessional shortwave receiver which limits
my capability considerably. I do have a sophisticated Bearcat which per-
mits me to listen to area law enforcement agencies which I find interesting
and relaxing. I probably could become a Police Dispatcher with all the
knowledge I've gained listening to this media.
I have always felt that my knowledge and that of others who have
"retired" is a most valuable asset/;''ould not be lost by our organization.
FPIS spent a considerable amount of time and money training us and even
now r?vides us with a very generous pension. Speaking of Cruising
Monitors, a very small and rare breed, are not developed overnight. Years

e to volunteer my services to F'l S . I don't know what the r ce ~t o
base in this area is but from what I hear on my limited facilities mini-
mal. reception if not more is possible. rv If the Field Operations Staff
would like to take advantage of my offer to provide assistance the only
request of 'TIS that I would make is that you provide a, Collins 51J2
receiver, converter; Xtel_ printer and accessories as well as franking
privileges and possible authorization to use Federal 800 telephone
system for communications. Specific requests for information by EPOS
will, be riven priority and I will make available my routine observations
as time permits. Servicing of equipment could be done atey iJest since
we take several jaunts to the Keys each year. Please be assured that
security of information and equipment will prevail. I., don't believe that
I had any security violations in all the years of ray service. If this
offer has merit and generates interest on the part of FBIS I would be most
happy to enter into further communications in finalizing arrangements.
In closing I would like to extend my greetings and best wishes to
the dedicated. people of 315.
Sincerely,
