MEMORANDUM FOR THE RECORD
SUBJECT: Trip Report
1. The Undersigned attended the SHARE 60 Conference, a
user group in the computer industry, during the week starting
20 February 1983.
2. The objective of the trip was twofold: 1) to meet
other people in data processing for the purpose of exchanging
ideas and experiences, and 2) to attend some sessions, especially
those presented by the Management Division of SHARE.
3. The objectives were met. In talking with other attendees
you very quickly realize that we certainly share some of the same
problems. For example, technology is moving faster than we can
keep people trained, the limitations on finding and hiring skilled
personnel, and the ability to deal with the dramatic increases
of the rate of change.
4. There were a number of sessions that addressed the two
relatively new areas or concepts in the industry today. They
are the Information Center and Quality Assurance. Both are in their
infancy and their effectiveness isn't known at this time. Both are
looked at, especially quality assurance, as a long-term investment
(approximately five years).
The Information Center is an organizational approach that
offers potential productivity gains by supporting end users.
The Center provides the guidance, training, and assistance
to end users in the use of appropriate products to improve the
productivity of managers and staff professionals.
5. In summary, the conference was enlightening and worth-
while.
