Applications
The six-day GIM-II Procedures Course was completed by
13 students. The two-day Delta Data 7260 Facilities Course was
completed by 15 students. This course was revised extensively and
is now an extremely successful addition to our training program.

Processing
Batch Services Branch/SPD conducted a full center test of
JES3 SP level software in the Center on 21 August. Testing STAT
went well with only minor problems surfacing. Production
implementation is scheduled for 9 September. STAT
and members of IBM, ED, and SPD visited
Southern New England Bell in New Haven, Connecticut, and
Massachusetts Mutual Insurance of Springfield, Massachusetts, to
discuss the operational impact of running a remote output service
area. No major obstacles were cited at either installation
visited.
Emulation of IBM 3270 terminals by Delta Data 7260s using
CAM has gone into production on the STAR System in the Special
Computer Center. A sudden influx of new users on unfamiliar
terminals did expose a number of problems in earlier versions of
the emulation software, but the system has now been running stably
without known problems for several weeks.
The Data Base Computer Center move from 5D55 Headquarters to
GG2202 Headquarters has been delayed due to the C&P telephone
strike.

RECON Guard pre-installation testing to determine exact
electrical characteristics of the COMTEN RECON
scheduled for the upcoming week.
Special Projects Staff
A document that will provide an overview of SAFE's
capabilities aimed at the general reader is nearing completion.
The body of the document is in final draft form; the graphics to
support the text are being finalized. The document--its working
title is the SAFE Functional Overview Document--will be available
for distribution at PDR.

SUBJECT: ODP Report for Week Ending 26 August 1983
1. Office of Data Processing (ODP) Strategic Plan
The final version of the ODP Strategic Plan was
distributed to Agency Deputy Directors, Office Directors, and
members of the Information Systems Board and its associated
working groups. Individual copies of the Plan were also
provided to all ODP employees and all ADP Control Officers.
2. Excess ADP Equipment
The procedure transferring the four remaining excess
SAFE Project Burroughs B6930 computer systems to the control of
the General Services Administration (GSA) was completed on
17 August. GSA will reassign the systems for use in other
Government agencies. This action completes the Agency's
involvement in the redistribution of the excess SAFE Burroughs
computer systems. One dual B7800 system and six B6930s were
successfully reassigned to Intelligence Community agencies.
3. Visit to Wang on CRAFT
On 16 August, Chief, Word Processing Branch/ODP;
Chief, Engineering Division/ODP; and Chief, Field Systems
Group, Information Management Staff/DO visited Wang Labs,
Lowell, Massachusetts, to discuss the CRAFT Project
requirements with the Vice President of Wang System
Development, the Vice President of Wang Office Systems
Development, and several other Wang Vice Presidents and
Directors of Product Marketing. The Agency has requested
systems analysis support from Wang for this Project.
4. Outbuilding Problems
The Credit Union Remote Data Processing Facility
experienced major problems on 18 and 19 August because of air
conditioning failure. Print facilities were not available on

18 August for over three hours. Terminal service was not
affected. Limited print facilities were available on 19 August
until 0930. Terminal service on 19 August was unavailable from
0600-1000. Normal operations resumed at 1000 on 19 August.
All printers and communications lines were out of
service at the Ames Facility from 1445 15 August through
1315 16 August. The outage was attributed to a pair of open
wires on the T-1 service in the basement. Repairs were made by
Office of Communications (OC) and C&P personnel.
5. Trouble Desk Activity
The ODP Trouble Desk handled a total of 940 phone
calls for the week of 15-21 August: 710 incoming calls,
230 outgoing calls, and 107 Wang calls. Of the incoming calls,
137 reported terminal problems.
6. Production Division Conference
Personnel from ODP's Production Division are attending
a conference in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, this week.
