Excess Equipment A special microfiche storage and retrieval system, referred to as "WALNUT", was developed for the Agency by IBM in the early 1960s. This DDO-owned system has been declared excess to the Agency's needs. Because of WALNUT's unique historical value due to it's "first of a kind nature", the Smithsonian Institution has requested receipt of the system. The transfer of the system, properly sanitized, is being coordinated by the Office of Training and Education (OTE) and the Information Management Staff (IMS). 2. Message Handling Facility (MHF) Project The MHF Project Team held an all-day management review of the MHF Preliminary Design. This review of the high-level design was attended by 21 people representing the following components: the Office of Data Processing's (ODP) Engineering and Systems Development Divisions; the Office of Communication's (OC) newly created Management Liaison Staff; the DDO/IMS; and the DDI's Analytic Support Group (ASG). The review was hosted by the LIMS development contractor, Booz, Allen, and Hamilton, and attended by representatives from ODP, the Office of Logistics (OL), the Office of Finance (OF), and the Office of the Inspector General (OIG). The objectives of the review were to ensure that certain technical questions have been answered and to verify that the LIMS Definition Phase has been completed. The SDR was successful and the Government agreed that the review objectives had been attained. On 3 November, representatives from the user, support, and training organizations from both the CIA and the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) will be briefed by the Mitre Corporation on how the SAFE Training Plan will be developed. Mitre is the contractor responsible for this task. On 27 October, the Director of Data Processing and other senior ODP personnel visited Wang Laboratories, Incorporated, in Lowell, Massachusetts, to discuss Wang's corporate strategic plans for multifunctional workstations, networking, and emerging office technologies. Information was exchanged with high interest and enthusiasm by both organizations, and follow-on meetings are planned. 7. Briefing for the Executive Director (EXDIR) On 1 November, the EXDIR was briefed by ODP on Wang word processing equipment, the Automated Information Management System (AIM) for electronic mail, the Host-Based Word Processor (HBWP) and other related topics.
