Approved For : [j ~3 t I-Q14 g8U%o8 V1 27-4 15 tEC 1976 Metrics in Federal Cataloging 1. Federal Item Identification Guides (FIIG), which establish the characteristic requirer.ients for item identifications in the DIDS data base, are including provisions for both metric and english values for some characteristics as they are being rewritten (long range). However, these are either-or choices for the Federal catalogers and we have not received metric values on iter.i descriptions except those already in common use (tiz, IJIZ etc). 2. The attached sariple 1. was received in the DLSC Newsletter of May, 197G. Sorge Identification Lists now contain the metric and english equivalents for certain values (see sample 2., copy of IL fiche) which are intended for familiarization only. 3. Hy GSA source is not aware of any published study or objective regarding metric conversion, including milestones, but he is contacting (12/13) DLSC to verify. I suspect actual utilization of metric data is very long range and related to industrial conversion before it can be applied to our logistics functions. i;iii b 1 T INA1 USE O l Approved For Reease1 6~1~06 : CIA-RDP85-00988R000400060027-4
