The Classification Review Division (CRD) conducts the systematic classification review of.Agency material 20 years or older as required by Executive order and has taken on additional review responsibilities as follows: (a) external systematic review primarily at the National. Archives and Records Service (NABS) where CRD reviews CIA information and documents held in the. permanent records of other U.S. government agencies which are being reviewed systematically; (h) review of the Foreign Relations of the U.S. (FRUS) series for the Department. of State including its coordination within CIA; (c) review of other official manuscripts primarily from the Department of Defense, an activity which is expected to increase in volume over the next few years; (d) review of non-official manuscripts written by former CIA employees, a task that has grown dramatically; and (e) FOIA, Mandatory, and other miscellaneous review requests that have foturd their way to CRD for action. 2. The annual production averages over 1980 and 1981 .for these activities are as follows: Internal systematic review: 1,609,675 pages External systematic review: 40,127 pages (support of other agencies) Review of FRUS: 3,805 pages Review of otkic~r. official manuscripts: 1,750 pages Review of non--official manuscripts : 13,903 pages FOI.;A, Mandatory, and miscellaneous review requests: 2,140 pages 3. Another CR0 responsibility is the systematic review program for OSS and predecessor Agency records which is being done by annuitants hired on contract. We expect to complete the essential security classification review of permanent OSS records by the end of the current fiscal year. The average annual production for 1980 and 1981 in the systematic OSS review has been 880 cubic. feet.. (Note: One cubic foot equals about 2,000 pages.) Approved For Release 2005/12/14: CIA-RDP85B00236R000100180006-9 I` Approved For Releaw2005/12/14 : CIA-RDP85B00236R000p180 Staiistics to Update the Capacity Indicator for CRD - April 1982 In 1977 the Classification Review Division (CRD) was created by taking per$onnel from each of the directorates to form a central reviewing capability to onduct the systematic classification review of Agency material 20 years or lder as required by EO 11652. While this has remained the major task for CRDJ the unit gradually has been given additional review responsibilities which hav steadily consumed a greater share of the CRD effort. These review tasks include: 1) External systematic review primarily at the National Archives and R cards Service (??RS) where CRD reviews CIA information and documents held in e thelperr:~anent records of other U.S. government agencies which are being reviewed systematically; 2) Review of the Foreign Relations of the U.S. (FRUS) within the series for the Department of State including its coordination X CIAt 3) Review of other official manuscripts primarily from the Dep rtment of Defense, an activity which is expected to increase in volume over the next few years; 4) Review of Nonofficial manuscripts written by former CIA employees, a task that has grown dramatically as shown in the attpched chard; and 5) FOIA, Mandatory and other miscellaneous review requests that have found their way to CRD for action. Another current CRD responsibility is the systematic review program for and predecessor agency records which was begun in 1972 when four annuitants wet hired on contract to review OSS material held at MARS. This unit grew to security classification 15 officers but is now down to 13 and expects to complete the essential/review of ~Iermanent OSS records by the efid of the current fiscal year. Statistics fori the earlier years of activity of this group are not readily available but their production by cubic feet for recent years has been recorded as follows: 647 cu ft in 1979; 948 cu ft in 1980; and 811 cu ft in 1981.
