OX Richard H. Davis, Dep. Asst. Secty for European Affairs
received a phone call from Sol W. Curry, Norton, Va., on behalf
on Mr. Oliver Powers, to inform the State Department that he had
received a telegram from Nikita Khrushchev in answer to a letter
he had written to him through the Sovie Em asst' i.n Was ington.
Text:
"I have received your letter with a request to forward to your srn
his mojher's note. In your letter you wrote that the note was
enclosed, but for some reason it was not found in the envelope.
I must inform you that your son will be tried according to the laws
of the Soviet Union. The law is the law and I am not in a position
to interfere in the matter, which is entirely within the compe-
tence of the court. If you wish to come to the Soviet Union to
see your son, I am ready to help you in this matter. (Signed)
