CHIVE: Task charged to Devel Div/OCS to investigate the
application of EDP tb the positive Intel info storage and
retrieval activities of CIA and design an improved info
retrieval system. Cuts across all Agency organizational lines
in that the info needs of all components are being considered.
Contractor assistance provided by IBM.
During reporting pd. the major findings and recommended design
parameters resulting from Phase I system studywere presented
to Agency management. Thdse were reviewed by an intra-Agency
committee composed of reps from various CIA components. In
---October 1963, the committee completed its analysis of the
CHIVE proposals and recommended that the project continue into
-a second phase with careful testing of system feasibility
prior to implementation.
Work in recent months on Phase II system design consisted
primarily of extending and refining prelim design concepts
-coupled with some initial testing of indexing techniques.-
In Dec 1963 a formal report CHIVE/R-1-63, was issued which
--presented the preliminary functional specs-for system and indicat
ed critical problem areas in system design. Succeeding studies
addressed specific tasks
