Father employed by oil company there. 1952-53 Eric Gairy at his height as union organizer. 1959 Cuban Revolution. 1960 Constitution grants semi-independent status with Completes elementary school at Wesley Hall and at St. Georges. government through an administrator, an Execu- tive Council, and Legislative Council. 1961-62 Gairy serves as Chief Minister. 1963 Graduates from Presentation College; goes to London University to study. 1969 President of West Indian Association, London; marries Angela Redhead. 1970 Receives law degree from London University and starts private law practice in St. Georges. 1971 Founds New Jewel Movement (NJM). 1973 Constitutional Conference in London recommends 18 November, "Bloody Sunday," Bishop brutalized by police. independence for Grenada. 1974 7 February, Grenada receives full independence 21 January, father fatally shot by police during antigovernment from Great Britain. Gairy elected Prime Minister. demonstration. Bishop blames Gairy. 1975 Gairy increases efforts to curb NJM activities; forces movement newspaper underground. 1976 Allegations of election fraud against Gairy for Founds People's Alliance Party; elected to Parliament. restricting seats won by People's Alliance to six. 1977 1979 Named opposition leader in Parliament.
