MEMORP BUM FOR: Deputy Director for Intelligence
FROM: Deputy Director of Central Intelligence
SUBJECT: Congressional Briefings
'sseaH~a Bra
7 March 1983
1. The recent briefings to freshman Congressmen have been
extremely successful and I think we have laid the groundwork for a
warm and easy dialogue with a number of the new Congressmen and
women.
2. We have also made use of the forums with the new members to
point out that indeed Congress is one of our most important customers.
This may cause a spate of queries or requests for information or briefings
which will undoubtedly add to the burden which Congress already places.
upon the DDI. I urge that your Directorate continue its most responsive
attitude towards such requests under the simple ground rule that a well
informed Congress cannot help but make our legislation-supporting policy
that much better.
3. It may come as no surprise to you that the Agency averaged two
briefings a day to the members and/or staff during 1982. I see no dimi-
nution in that level of effort. You may want to pat your Directorate on
the back for the super work that they are doing in keeping our Congressionali
fences well mended.
