Dear Mr. Casey:
On April 30, 1983, I joined with Senators Denton, DeConcini,
and Helms to hold a joint hearing into the role of Cuba in
drug trafficking. Under the jurisdiction of the Senate Drug
Enforcement Caucus, the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on
Security and Terrorism, and the Senate Foreign Relations
Subcommittee on Western Hemishpere Affairs, we heard specific
evidence on Cuban Government drug trafficking. I strongly
urge you to aggressively investigate the extent of this
national security threat and take immediate action to stop it.
For your information, I will send to you an unedited copy of
the hearing record. Because our witnesses can provide detailed
information into the role of Cuba, I believe that it is
vital that they be fully questioned by your staff.
The fact that Castro has chosen to associate himself with
criminal elements and international smugglers is a clear
indication of his contempt for international law, and his
intent to undermine American society. I believe that the
important findings of our hearing underscores the undeniable
role that the Cuban dictator has played in international
drug trafficking. I urge your immediate and aggressive
action against this national threat.
Thank you for your attention .to this matter. I would be
pleased to meet with you to discuss the hearing findings.
Sincerely,
PH: jdh
Paula Hawkins
United States Senator
