SUBJECT: Investigation of Salvadoran Death
Squad Patrons (S)
In response to your December 1, 1983, memorandum. regarding
the above-captioned matter, please be advised that on November 4,
1983, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of Inter-
American Affairs, James Michel, met with Department of Justice
officials to discuss allegations that patrons of Salvadoran death
squads are providing funds and weapons to them from the United
States. At that time Mr. Michel provided the Department with
several possible sources of information on this matter. (S)
Following the meeting with Mr. Michel, we asked the Federal
Bureau of Investigation to review the information provided by
Mr. Michel and to interview suggested sources. The FBI currently
is conducting these interviews and reviewing this matter in order
to determine whether there is an adequate predicate o~
information upon which to base a broader investigation. The FBI
expects to complete that process within the next few days. (S)
In that regard, it is important that you provide us imnedi-
ately with any additional sources of information or evidence
regarding this alleged activity that you may have. Please
provide any such information to D. Lowell Jensen, Associate
Attorney General. (S)
