Dear Mr. Director:
As I am sure you are aware, the House Judiciary Committee has for many years
been concerned about the presence of suspected Nazi war criminals in the
United States and the possibility that Executive Branch agencies may have
facilitated their entry and protected them once they were admitted. Recent
news accounts about the return of former Gestapo Chief Klaus Barbie to France
from Bolivia, have again raised the specter of possible links between U.S.
intelligence agencies and Nazi war criminals. Among the allegations are that
American agents protected Barbie from French officials, assisted his escape to
South America, and paid him for "intelligence" information.
Because these allegations could obviously shed some light on the relationship
between the intelligence community and suspected war criminals living in this
country, I believe it is imperative for my Committee to ascertain precisely
what transpired in the Barbie case. Therefore, I have requested GAO to broaden
the scope of its present investigation concerning alleged Nazi war criminals
to include the Barbie matter. The Committee, through GAO, requests it be
supplied with all information in the files of your agency relating in any
manner to Klaus Barbie. While the following list is not meant to be exclusive,.
the Committee is particularly interested in: (1) any record or knowledge of
Barbie's employment by the U.S. government, including occasional payments for
services rendered; (2) any records or knowledge of any assistance rendered by
officials of our government to Barbie; (3) any records or knowledge of contacts
with the French government regarding Barbie; (4) any records or knowledge of
efforts to protect Barbie from French authorities; and (5) any internal
investigations or studies related to the Barbie matter or to the use of other
alleged war criminals by agencies of the U.S. government.
Because of the importance of this matter, I would ask that you provide this
material as expeditiously as possible.
Thank you.
Si ncyrely,
1
