The other day Senator Patrick Leahy
called to tell me that the briefings that
he received by CIA prior to his travel to
Russia, et al, were just super. They
were on target, extremely pertinent and
made him feel very confident--he knew what
was going on.
He also commented that Senator Dale
Bumpers told him during the course of the
trip that he, Bumpers, had received
briefings from State, DIA and CIA and
that only CIA made any sense. It was
obvious that there was considerable sub-
stance behind the CIA briefings--State
and DIA were merely a veneer.
