Dear Friend,
April 11, 1983.
We need your help on an unprecedented educational
project. We are undertaking a three year study of the
effect of the print and electronic media on policymaking
in the federal government. While there have been many
theories about press-government relationships, never before
has there been a systematic effort to try to identify pre-
cisely the impacts of the press on government from the per-
spective of the policymaker. It is pioneering work.
We are asking you to participate in this effort because
of your significant experience at the federal level. We.can
assure you complete anonymity and confidentiality. It would
be impossible to discover how the press affects policymaking
without the ideas of people like you, who have had first
hand experience.
The results of this study will be published, widely
disseminated, and discussed by senior professionals in both
government and the media. This research will provide know-
ledge for teaching students of both American government and
the media.
I know how.busy you are, and that we are asking for
some of your valuable time to share your thoughts with others
interested in the relationship between government and the
media. Very simply, this is an exciting and challenging
piece of work and we can not do a first rate study,, without
you.
If you have any questions, please feel free to write
or-call.
Thanks in advance for your help.
