1. Action Requested: Accept or .r an
interview for a cover story on you by
reporter for NEWSWEEK magazine.
2. Background:
covering the CIA in a fair and favorable way and expressed more
interest in covering longer-term substantive issues and
stories, such as CIA's progress since the cutbacks in the
Carter years, than in sensational stories like "Debategate".
said NEWSWEEK expects to commission a
cover story on you and the Agency before the end of the
summer. He would like an interview using a question-and-answer
format where the transcript would be provided to you after the
meeting to be sure it reflected correctly what you had to say.
He would write his story from that transcript, The focus
would be on how the CIA stands under your stewardship including
how the CIA has grown, changes in operations, the NIC and
National Intelligence Estimates, and the beefing up of the
CIA's analytic staff. He would also want to cover some
questions about you personally and would wish to interview John
