Update on Israeli-Syrian Tensions
Defense Minister Arens told Ambassador Lewis on Monday that
Israel was reaching the limit of its tolerance on PLO attacks and
was working on contingency plans for action against the PLO.
-- Arens repeated earlier Israeli charges that the PLO
incidents were instigated by the Syrians and said the
Israelis believe there now are 900 PLO members in West
Beirut.
Israeli concern about these activities will be intensified
by the reported bombing of Israeli troops in Beirut this
morning. We cannot confirm press reports that three Israelis
were killed.
